Below are some frequently asked questions that are helpful for students to know before their first attempt at the MPT.
Where does the math placement test take place?
The math placement test is done through an online platform called ALEKS PPL, which can be accessed at any time. Each student who takes the placement test through ALEKS PPL will be charged a $20 fee upon registration, which covers 12 months of access to the Prep and Learning Module.
What types of questions are on the test?
The MPT tests students on a range of topics between algebra to trigonometry. Students are encouraged to do their first attempt without rigorous preparation in order to get an accurate measure of their baseline math skills.
What is the format of the questions?
ALEKS is not a multiple-choice Placement Assessment. It is open-response and requires you to work out solutions with a paper and pencil, then enter them into ALEKS. Be sure to have scratch paper with you.
How many questions are on the test?
The assessment is up to 30 questions and can stop anywhere between 20 - 30 questions depending on the student's performance.
How long does it usually take to complete?
Students have up to two hours to complete the test once it starts. Students generally take 60 - 90 minutes to complete the test.
The module will automatically time out after two hours and will not save your progress. If this happens, you will be required to to restart the test.
How do I know how to use ALEKS?
Before you the placement test officially starts, ALEKS will present a short tutorial on how to enter answers, how to use the graphing utilities, and how to use the built in calculator that will be offered when appropriate.
What materials do I need for the test?
Before you begin, you'll need:
- Your MyUCLA logon ID and password
- Your credit card and billing information
- A reliable internet connection
- Pencil and paper
- A space conducive to doing your best work
- 2-3 hours of time
- Make sure to disable grammar correcting programs
You may only use a pen or pencil, paper, and the resources provided within ALEKS. You should not receive assistance from friends, family, other websites, textbooks, or AI platforms any other resource not provided by ALEKS.
Since this is a placement test, it is in your best interest not to cheat. You do not want to be placed in a class that is too advanced and compromise your academic success.
